For many of us, a great story evokes something in our imagination. It gives us the opportunity to dream, to reminisce and in sometimes escape from our reality.

Storytelling in itself is an art, an art that Rapman is increasingly becoming popular for. The rapper from London has added to his catalogue of stories with his newest release “Shiro’s story”. His rap style has never been the most endearing but his stories have always grabbed people’s attention, through thought provoking concepts and plots. The proof is in the numbers. His most recent video accumulated 1.1 million views in just 5 days. A great feat by an artist who is still yet to spread his influence around the country. However, this is no fluke. The rapper has also received a lot of applaud for previous stories like “Blue Story Trilogy”, which received a 1 million views and “Promise” , which received a respectable 529k views.

Words matter. They come alive and form pictures which consequently becomes art. Hence why certain rappers prefer the title “Artist”.

Rapman deserves the title not just for his ability to tell a story, but his ability to paint pictures vivid enough to be made into a movie. Because that’s what he created. When the song “Shiro’s story” was sent to me, I had no idea who I was listening to or what I was watching at the time.
The first scene of the music video looked like the opening of a UK TV drama series. The great thing about the visual is that it coincides perfectly with the narrator’s story. So much detail was put into the lyrics of the song but clearly so much emphasis was put on the quality of acting and direction of the video.

The story line comprises of a reality that is familiar to some, if not many. A tale of two friends who grow up in the streets of London, pursuing dreams that provide a better quality of life.

During the course of the story, you begin to see the vision of the two friends differ. Although they are able to resolve their differences amicably, the story ends with a nasty surprise that leaves the viewers shocked. The proof, yet again is in the numbers but also from viewers’ reactions to the video. Many listeners ran to social media to express their shock and distress at how things planned out in the story.

YouTubers even took it upon themselves to upload their reactions to Youtube.

The reaction videos alone have accumulated at least 100,000 views. Testament to a great story, written by a very talented artist.

A fellow colleague of mine put it beautifully:

Rapman has found something that works for him and provides lessons with the content he gives. And with the current state of things, musically and otherwise, its needed – Anita (@annieantwi)

If he continues in this vein, Rapman can hold a title, that is still up for grabs: “The best story teller in the UK .
