The emerging, and ever talented, Jorja Smith makes a favouring brave move to start off her new song “Let Me Down” by saying, “sometimes I wouldn’t mind if I was less important… But I’ve got you to let me down”. At first listen, it sounds like a sad song about losing yourself, but according to Smith, it’s about not being important to someone and being okay with the pain that comes with.

Once I found out what the song means to her, I had to re-listen to it. Jorja Smith isn’t an artist you just play when cleaning the house. She’s that smooth sound that you can vibe with on a Saturday night. You have to feel her lyrics and tone with the proper intentions. It’s hard not to resonate with her.

With over 1.6M plays on Spotify, fans are falling in love with her even more after the music video being released. “A dream of mine is to write a Bond theme tune. When I am writing music I sometimes envision a video playing alongside,” says Smith, “Let Me Down” does sound quite Bond-y: you can imagine it during a scene when James Bond has gone down into an underground, dimly lit, secret bar and he approaches the Bond girl who is sitting at the bar looking very guilty because she’s done something bad and let him down. It’s clear she takes pride in how she creates her music.

So, you may be thinking, “Oh, I’ve never heard this artist before,” but you actually have! She opens up the song Get It Together from Drake’s album More Life (2017), with a verse leading into the hook where you begin to hear Drake’s voice. She was also featured on HBO’s Insecure soundtrack in 2017 with a song entitled Fine Lines. Although her music career just took off in 2016, she’s making incredible moves in the industry at an elegant pace.

Are you a fan yet? Be on the lookout for her new album Summer 2018. In typical artistic fashion, she says, “I have all the songs but no album title.” For 2018, she’s looking forward to more people hearing her music and hopes that her music can help them get happy and stay happy. Because her music has done so much for her growing up, she wants her music to resonate with her audience in the same ways.
